I want to draw - I have to draw!

This little blog should – in a perfect world - function as a peek into my personal little trip down the road of drawing. I can guarantee there will be plenty of road rage, steep learning curves, crying and thumb sucking involved.
If you scroll down you will see some of my begging steps (hahahaha I'll let that stand - Freudic slip - but I mean *beginning*). Since I never really did any drawing prior, I don’t have any old drawings lying around to share either - unfortunately.
My starting level was nothing, stickmen and general straight line challenged, with an newly added circle handicap – good fucking game.
But I’m determined I will learn this, whatever the cost.

Just upload you newb!

It's not that I'm not drawing, it's just I'm lazy and it's too damn easy to skip updating the blog and just go for a quick facebook post. Habbits and all that jazz!

Wanted to paint a sensation of having the "scatterbrains"!
sea of random thoughts

Some gesture drawings and quick sketches.

A... thing, not sure what it is, but I can't finish it for shit, prolly due to me not knowing wtf it is, but it just sorta popped out of some color mixing.

Pratice, pratice and pratice. Trying to figure out the basics once again ><

Trying not to forget to draw with pencils from time to time, though I'm getting bad at keeping up with the good old 2B. I blame "ctrl+Z".
Also the constant "You have to draw from life!" rant is getting a bit annoying for me. I'm to shy to just go out and sit my ass down and draw ppl in public, so it just turns into stuff like the first two pics... a box and a pillow - how inspiring!

I started on an Purple Tentacle drawing on my wall here - which I immediately regretted! ><

I wanted to try and understand, and work on a more comicbook style of drawing, that whole field is like... very confusing to me. But here's my take on a perfect Danish day of summer :P

Got shittons of more to upload, but don't wanna turn this into a huge wall of doom, so that can wait a day or two I think ><

Blah Blah Blah more SAI stuff

Was away for a couple of days and getting back into the grind is a slow process for me. :)

Butts, I’ve been looking into “painting” with SAI some more and done a few pieces, nothing big though.
I’m starting to get frustrated with it, in an attempt to get as close to a painting sensation or work process – how I imagine it to be at least – I kept it to one layer, no fancy effect or tricks, just one brush setting and that was it. This is how it looks if anyone would be interested in that stuff…

Anywho, the first one is Jeff Bridges in True Grit, I did it in pretty much one go, I got a bit lost tbh it was fun and new… blah blah. I didn’t measure a single thing it was all done “gefühl” or wtf too call it… sense? It was major annoying not being able to do details, I really fucked myself over trying to keep it “realistic” when you have to paint over the same spot 10 times before the color really sets, then doing details like correct eyelids, nose and well general features, becomes a bit of a “meh cba”. Still fuck it, it was sorta fun :)

I started on a painting with the same premise as the True Grit, but of Queen Anne’s Revenge from Pirates of the Caribbean. Initially I thought I had start something I couldn’t possible finish, the shit was just too complex, but this “lolol paint shit” sorta defeats the whole getting the whole detail shit right, so I was slightly surprised I managed to finish it and not just throw it away after a couple of minutes. This time I did make sure to save the steps though, so yeah gg… Half-way through I felt I made the sky too bright, so I wanted to correct that, but omfg that shit is impossible when u got a ship in the middle of everything and it’s all on one layer… fml! But again it’s the same story as the girl in the jeans; I gotta get the background shit correct first and then move on, going back and do an entire rework of the background in the middle of things is just a huge ass time sink, so hopefully I’ll learn that someday.
In the end I did a brightness/contrast adjustment, because I’m weak…

Also I put some colors on the Aliens in Photoshop, just for giggles, it’s… I don’t know, not correct, the glow from the finger should be reflected more, but what can you do… you live and learn :)

Oh and last one. I wanted to try something with Plato's cave allegory, but I never got past the idea really... maybe another day.

Nothing to see here...

Just a quick scribble, no details... but entirely a product of my own fucked up brain and state of mind. I wanted to first draw a hand squishing an eyeball, but went with this instead... while drawing this I thought about drawing the other eye and have a finger covering the entire pupil, but maybe tomorrow. Also I could go further with the hand acting as eyelids..."should've would've could've"

The Kimon Nicolaides exercises makes as much sense as two smurfs sailing a rubber duck.

Still on Kimon Nicolaides book – The natural way to draw. It’s getting harder and harder - the soloing is problematic, basically I got no idea if I understand his exercises correct and they are pretty… out there.

Lately I’ve been working on some weight exercises which go into some modeled exercises, but the problem is exactly that, these exercises builds on each other, so if I don’t understand wtf is going on than the whole foundation which the next ones will be built on could be utterly bullshit.
In short; the frustrations of not having some kind of mentor or teacher to steer my learning in the right directions… is getting quite frustrating.
In the weight exercises your supposed to mass up your object from the core and out, getting a feel of mass and weight/energy - fair enough, but ffs if I’m looking at the model or object then I can’t fucking mass it out and get the feeling of sculpting out the thing, so when I look I can get the feel which is the intention, but then I might as well be “drawing” a ball, because all sense of form and shape is out the window, likewise if I’m looking at the drawing then I lose the sense of massing it out, because then I’m drawing from imagination more than observation… that’s a problem.
Some examples of my weight drawings.

Now comes the modeled exercise, you spend the first 10 minutes massing it out like in the weight exercise, then you’re supposed to “feel” the object and draw like it was cross contour, first vertical and then horizontal, darker representing depth – again, I get the meaning, but if I’m drawing for example a body and I’m supposed to get the sensation of drawing and touch being linked together, then I HAVE TO LOOK!!! But back to the previous shit, IF I’M FUCKING LOOKING AT MY OBJECT THEN I MIGHT ASWELL BE DRAWING A BIG FAT FUCKING DARK HOLE!

Some more gesture (60 second gesture from photo reference). This is one of my problems; my style goes from one direction to another, I know there’s no right or wrong, but there’s a slow way and a fast way… that I fucking know and me swaying from one extreme to another can’t be smart.

I got so mad about those modeled exercises, I just had to do something else, so why not jump in the completely other ditch and make some smurfs sail a rubber duck? At least it would be imagination for once.
I wanted to make the water and duck look more “realistic” but yeah… no, I’m not sure I’m willing to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out that procedure… O.o In a perfect world I would like to come back to it and correct some of the mistakes, the duck and his huge hand for example… - but you know what they say about big hands… and smurfette does look pretty content - still her skirt should be more animated and he needs a right hand as well etc. blab la blab la bla

... and yes my smurfette got juggs hahaha - I couldn't help it.

Yeah, I had to make a few alterations, moving up the beak on the duck, giving the male smurf a right leg... still no arm, some alterations to the sky and water, plus a little island/beach shit :)

smurfette with boobs

Okay, okay, might as well just continue to do these small updates... :P Still working on the MS FUCK-A-DUCK, it's really really fucking hard to make that bloody duck work, the reflection/shadows kinda help though, but still not satisfied - and no I don't really wanna start a shadow project on the smurfs, I like them to stay somewhat 2D and in a perfect world work more on making the rest seem more "living".

Just looked at the first draft again, I think that duck got downs syndrom or something... O.o

Good fucking night! :)

Slow and steady wins the race!

I’m a bit slow with the updates atm and I apologize for that, but I found a book called “The Natural Way To Draw – by Kimon Nicolaides”, it really suits me and it’s pretty much what I have been looking for.
It’s very organized with schedules and exercises, there’s no swaying feel good “just do what you want, it’s all just for fun and game tihi – bullshit”, it’s very point A to point B, which I’ve been missing in authors like Vilppu and Loomis, imho they take your hand and follow you on the road and don’t really bother with start or finish. Kimon tells you where you’re expected to start and where finish is and then gives you some basic tools, which you need to learn while on the road… and I love that, gimme a fucking compass and I’ll get there! I don’t want some fucking hiking buddy holding my hand… telling me every fucking swing and bump there’s on the road – PISS OFF!
Long story short, there’s not really much point in uploading those drawings, since it will make absolute no sense - heck most of them don’t even make sense to me the day after. I will share a quick one just as an example to what it is I’m working on :P
On a side note – Contour drawing can seriously go fuck a duck!!!

I did two “normal” drawings as well ofc.
First is a gun from a friend’s book of different firearms, don’t ask…
Nothing big, but still fun to work with that many straight lines, though it’s a fucking hell to piece together, specially without a ruler, you’re pretty much forced to sketch out the whole thing and then start adding “basic” things and make them all fit together as a unit… ugh I miss circles and curves lol :P

Next is another tablet drawing. I wanted to start something from scratch and not from an old pencil sketch, just curious if I could do it really.
Pretty fun experience, though I’m a fucking bull in a china shop when it comes to understanding Photoshop… *sigh*

Painting with 0's and 1's! using a Bamboo Pen and Touch to draw in Photoshop

Playing around with the tablet I’ve borrowed!

It’s extremely difficult for me to get used to that thing, but I’ve given up trying to do “pencil” drawings with it, that’s just too alien, but I can at least try to “paint”.

I loaded up some of my old quick sketches and tried out this painting business.
After a lot of bitching and whining I got advised to check out Ctrlpaint.com for some basic tutorials and yeah… that worked, it’s fun how you can go from a feeling of absolute despair and frustrating to “this is kinda fun”, but yeah at least now I could have some fun and not worry about bloody line sketching with it.

I’ll prolly try and do some lines with it again (no nooo - not those sorta lines... grow up!), maybe it’s just some matter of building up a familiarity with the new tool, dunno.

Anyway, my first project was some bananas. I didn’t really know how to approach it, but even if it felt stupid I had the feeling of learning on some basic level at least.
One thing I discovered though – colors are great and painting is super fun! :P

Next I just wanted to keep going in the same track, so picked up a sketch of some citruses or oranges, not sure which term is correct lol, it's supposed to be citruses but my color “palette” decided it was oranges for me! :P
