I want to draw - I have to draw!

This little blog should – in a perfect world - function as a peek into my personal little trip down the road of drawing. I can guarantee there will be plenty of road rage, steep learning curves, crying and thumb sucking involved.
If you scroll down you will see some of my begging steps (hahahaha I'll let that stand - Freudic slip - but I mean *beginning*). Since I never really did any drawing prior, I don’t have any old drawings lying around to share either - unfortunately.
My starting level was nothing, stickmen and general straight line challenged, with an newly added circle handicap – good fucking game.
But I’m determined I will learn this, whatever the cost.

Live walking dead drawings... and other things

The promised “live” drawings - live as in on my monitor :P But anyway, they are done on time, I should be listing the time on the sketches.
Godefingdamnit this is how it feels to be knocked back in ludo. It’s like everything I have relied on until now is out the window, I don’t have time to really see the shapes or get proportion/perspective right, or it feel like I don’t have the time at least, so it’s all just “stress attack of the pencil 2.0 – starring a frustrated me!”
I’m sure there are A LOT of things to be learned and very useful things as well in this work, but I also got the annoying feeling like I skipped some part of crucial learning step before you can do these sorta drawings.
Nonetheless it’s all ups and downs, but practice :)
One thing is certain, I’m doing these things way to small – I should be doing one per page and not 4-5… Or maybe it’s just me.

Drawing naked chicks with a pencil is fun

I have been doing a lot of "not so" live drawing - trying to draw someone in a posse within a set time - which got me royally pissed off, since the stress of the clock and suddenly drawing a full body and not just the face, was a bit of an uncharted territory for me. I'll share some of them later, I heard humor is meant to be shared or something...
Anyway, lots of those models were naked and quite interesting to draw, which got me thinking... *yeye hah hah -.- grow up* it got me thinking about attempting to draw something out of my usual comfort zone - if that's something you can claim to have at this level lol.
So I dug out an interesting picture with a posse I thought was "manageable" and got to work... few minutes later I picked up the pen and started drawing - hahahaha, sorry I had to take the shot, cheap or not :P - anywho, godefingdamnit this shit was ALOT harder than I had anticipated. The scaling down of the head really did a number on me and I had to completely rethink my approach, plus the lack of "harder" lines to follow, but instead everything being in curves, was definitely something I found challenging, to say the least.

This is the outline sketch out of all the stuff I had thought to be the hard spots, I had completely overseen her front hand, wauw… talk about having to compromise and do things over and over, I could not translate what I saw to the paper at all, to such an extent I had to “manipulate” or be a bit creative about it you might say "fuck the index finger!!!"

And my end picture, it doesn’t scan super well, but you can make things out at least =)

Study of hands - more sketches of my hand!

Study, study, pratice, pratice, learn, learn!
Feels a bit weird using only pencil, but I prolly should dwell a bit longer with ze pencils! and not jump the shark with the charcoal :P

A quick sketch of my hand

I really don't have alot of time in the weekdays, but managed a sketch of my hand at least :)

Handful of Super Mario doodles and the beginning of a Liam Neeson portrait

I'm starting up with the studies again (le sigh), so time is limited to say the least.
But I did a handful of doodles in a Super Mario theme, can't remember why /shrug
And right now I'm working on a Liam Neeson portrait, which may or may not get finished, depending on time.
It's HIGHLY misguiding picture in this stage, I had to really turn up the contrast in Photoshop to show the lines, since it's just a sketch the lines are done really light, but that doesn't transfer for shit with a scanner ;)

A charcoal drawing of Rorsach

A quick "Rorsach", was about 20-30 minutes I think.

Charcoal is the new black - Drawing a spartan from the movie 300

Did another charcoal drawing, this time of some spartan from 300 - wuuu new and exciting... I know.

I'm starting to think I need to change approach and do something else for a while. I have been looking into some anatomy drawing to help drawing from mind. Sounds logical, but it's not the most thrilling thing in the world, still I'm positive that it will help me learn more about drawing - baby steps :)

Portrait drawing of Clint Eastwood done with charcoal

First I did a pencil drawing of this idol of mine, but again I got frustrated with how limited I feel when it comes to shadowing and drawing darker lines in general, I'm sure it's just some trick I haven't figured out yet, but fuck it's annoying! Anyway so again I turned to "old" faithful - coal. It's a strange trip I take when using the coal, I constantly get the "yeah great GREAT FUCKING JOB, everything is ruined now GOOD GAME FUCK AND MY LIFE" and then "oh... okay... this looks kinda cool" only to ruin it the next second. It's a rollercoaster haha, but I think I learned to actually patience myself a bit and not think everything is lost after the first base of coal, it takes several layers before I really get the feeling that this is something I can work with ><

One of these days I really gotta sit down and go through some of those scanner settings, because this shit is getting slightly annoying. Long forgotten or hidden lines just pop up here and there, but the worst is that any feel of smooth grayscaling gets killed. *WHINE* :)

Drawing Mila Kunis from The Book of Eli

Wanted to try and do a more Portrait style drawing in charcoal. But o'boy is it frustrating not being able to draw a simple thin line, you can compensate slightly with an eraser, but it feels to me like your just overcomplicating things for yourself, at least at my level.

One major problem I discovered doing this was - I fucking struggle to move past annoyance issues. I had big nose or more exactly nostril problems.

I’m fairly sure I was stuck in a loop of trying to draw “a” nose instead of just tuning out and draw the shapes observed. I spend way to long trying to brute force through this problem, until I finally just decided to work a bit on the rest. After I was somewhat done, I got back to the nose - I just couldn’t leave it. I printed out a cutout of the nose and tried to rediscover the shapes without the distractions of the familiarities of facial features. Finally I saw the shape that had been eluding me – the somewhat “mountain” triangle the front made – but I had utterly destroyed the paper at this point with erasing -> drawing -> erasing -> … so the corrections I could do wasn’t really satisfying, but I could finally put it away at least.

I’m sure I learned a thing or two with this drawing, nothing huge but as an old proverb goes: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step” ;)

"Thank you come again"

These are of course just a portion of the stuff I've done over the past month or so. But I most have gone through a full block or more already and scanning all that in... no, just no!

Again - scroll down to the end for the "start" :P

Drawing a Licker from Resident Evil

Hehe... I'm not fucked up - your face is!!! Ahem, another charcoal...
Resident Evil ftw.

Drawing a Soldier demon from Constantine with charcoal

Charcoal black thoughts! time to dig up some monsters :P *Weeee*
The scanner settings I know about at least doesn't fully cooperate with charcoal black drawings, but whatever.

Drawing Hulk with charcoal

My HERO and idol...

Help I forgot how to draw

Hahah yeah, this one was "fun" after a minor rage fit I took out the charcoal - if it was war it wanted it!
I don't think me or the drawing came out of this "conflict" as a winner. BUT it's pratice and charcoal is great fun - *ding* Unlocked CHARCOAL!

More Portrait, bad brightness but I can't correct it properly without fucking shit up to much.

Drawing Emma Stone from the movie In Time

Sorry Emma... :S
Had to make lots of adjustments to the nose, still can't fully wrap my head around the concept of making that look correct by using shadows. Prescription reads; PRATICE MORE U MONKEY!

Starting to get more used to drawing portraits
